Who We Are
The three founders of the Jarrett Publishing Company were teachers together at Jamaica High School in New York City as well as test writers for the New York Board of Regents:
Mark Jarrett studied at Columbia University (B.A.), the London School of Economics (M.A. in international history), and Stanford University, where he received a Ph.D. in European history and was the recipient of a university fellowship and of the David and Christina Phelps Harris Fellowship. His doctoral dissertation, Castlereagh, Ireland and the French Restorations of 1814 to 1815, examines British foreign policy at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Dr. Jarrett also received a law degree with honors (Order of the Coif) from the Law School of the University of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall), where he was an editor of the school’s law review, and received the American Jurisprudence Award for Comparative Legal History and the Prosser Prize for Federal Courts. He has taught at Hofstra University in New York, the Mander, Portman and Woodward School in London, England, and in the New York City Public Schools, and served as a test writer for the New York State Board of Regents. He also practiced law for ten years in the San Francisco office of Baker & McKenzie, the world’s largest law firm. His work as an attorney included representation of BP in litigation with the State of Alaska over the calculation of gas royalties, and representation of UMAX, a Taiwan co-defendant of Apple Computer, in a complex antitrust case concerning Apple’s intellectual property rights.
Stuart Zimmer is a retired social studies teacher. He has written Government and You and Economics and You. He served as a test writer for the New York State Board of Regents in social studies, and was a item-test writer for the National Scholarship Examination and Scholastic Aptitude Test. He has served as a curriculum writer for the New York City Board of Education. In addition, Mr. Zimmer has published numerous articles on teaching and testing in a variety of educational journals. He has presented at many educational workshops at local, state, and national teacher conferences. In 1989, Mr. Zimmer’s achievements were recognized by the New York State Legislature with a Special Legislative Resolution honoring his academic and professional accomplishments.
James Killoran is a retired assistant principal. He has written Government and You and Economics and You. Mr. Killoran has extensive experience in test writing for the New York State Board of Regents in social studies and has served on the Committee for Testing for the National Council for the Social Studies. His article on social studies testing has been published in Social Education, the countrys leading social studies journal. He has served as a curriculum writer for the New York City Board of Education. In addition, Mr. Killoran has won a number of awards for outstanding teaching and curricular development, including Outstanding Social Studies Teacher, and Outstanding Social Studies Supervisor in New York City. In 1993, he was awarded an Advanced Certificate for Teachers of Social Studies by the N.C.S.S. In 1997, he became Chairman of the N.C.S.S. Committee on Awarding Advanced Certificates for Teachers of Social Studies.
